Many men who try braces never go back to wearing a belt. The reason is both anatomical and aesthetic. Unlike a belt, which cinches the waist and can be uncomfortable when sitting down or after a heavy meal, braces ‘suspend’ the trousers from the shoulders. This has two immediate benefits:

• Perfect fit: The trousers always remain at the correct height (the natural waist), ensuring that the trouser crease stays vertical and sharp, and that the hem does not bunch up over the shoe.
• Slimming effect: By eliminating the horizontal line created by a belt (which ‘cuts’ a man in two), braces create a visual continuity that elongates the legs and torso, particularly flattering men of average height or those with a slight paunch.

• Button braces (leather loops): These are the purist option, typical of English tailoring (braces). They require the trousers to have buttons sewn onto the inside of the waistband. They add an unrivalled touch of distinction and are a must if you’re wearing a morning suit or a tuxedo.
• Metal-clip braces: The practical option. Their sturdy metal clips allow them to be attached to any trousers, from jeans to chinos, without the need for any prior sewing. They’re ideal for getting started with braces in a casual way. Our models allow you to swap the leather ends for the clips depending on the occasion, offering two accessories in one.

The design of the shoulder straps affects comfort. At MIRTO, we mainly opt for the Y-shape (a single strap across the back that splits into two at the front). This design is considered more formal and elegant than the X-shape, and is generally more comfortable as it prevents the straps from slipping off the shoulders, centring the point of support on the spine.

Traditionally, braces were considered underwear and were not meant to be seen. Today, the rules have changed. Whilst in a formal business setting they remain hidden beneath a jacket, at weddings, parties or in creative settings, showing your braces is a stylish touch.

Our colour range extends from understated navy blue, black or beige for formal occasions, to bold designs featuring stripes, chequered patterns, hunting motifs or geometric patterns.
